Rug Symbology

Find the piece that speaks to your needs..

Rugs are works of art, infused with the energy of the hands that make them.  In nomadic life a rug was not decoration, it was shelter, memory and meaning, carried from place to place.

They imbue not only the language of their makers but also stories of the lives they lived, aging, traveling and evolving alongside their people. Often woven by women with limited avenues for self-expression, the rug became a powerful visual language using symbols in the weave to communicate wishes, desires and intentions.

It is my belief that these intentions continue to live in each piece.  If you are looking for good wishes, creative energy, long-lasting relationships, fertility, protection, union, family, friendship or spiritual grounding, the right piece not only exists for your space but it belongs there.

Our current pieces:

THE PROTECTOR

The purpose of this rug is:
To Defend
“Protect this home, give it life, keep it strong”
Repeating triangles represent continuity, running water, vitality, endurance. In nomadic life water was sacred. The rug is powerful and tribal. Hooks within the triangles symbolize a ram’s horn for protection, while also acting as spiritual barbed wire to trap harmful forces before they reach the family.
Reds, black and orange are colors of protection, grounding, energy and warmth.

THE JOURNEY

The purpose of this rug is:
To Map the Path
“Trust the journey, you are not alone”
Meandering lines and path show journey and transition.
Asymmetry speaks to the acceptance of imperfection and the unpredictability of life.
Two forms meeting at a delicate point shows unity, balance, connection and the fragility of life. The composition held together by a single touch shows vulnerability, like a kiss, trust and quiet connection.

BALANCE

The purpose of this rug is:
To Hold Ground
“This space is safe and secure.”
Central forms in perfect line represent the axis of life: connection of earth, body and spirit. These sunburst-like symbols also represents a "Wheel of Life", which shows the cyclical aspect of nature and the idea that our troubles are only temporary.
Repeating medallions are sometimes a count of family members and encourage the continuity of generations.
Triangular lines on the border are representative of mountains, fortresses or thresholds that protect against chaos or intrusion. They honor the power and stability of the earth and the need to climb up both literally and figuratively to see things more clearly.
A strong multi-layered border keeps harmful forces out, protects the “interior world” and defines sacred personal space.

HARMONY

The purpose of this rug is:
Strength in Numbers
“This home will be prosperitous and balanced.”
Hourglass or Diamonds can represent the female form showing fertility, protection, and blessing for household prosperity.
The rug has strong symmetrical balance. The artist was bold and brave in their design. The shapes hold court with a presence like daggers or snake fangs. Fierce and protective.
Bold black shapes can also appear as portals on un-dyed sheep’s wool, an invitation to a pure + sacred space.
Two forms, perhaps twins, partners or friends show grounding though togetherness, harmony, and balance of time.

UNITY

The purpose of this rug is:
To Support and Encourage
“Protect this union, let life continue”
Diamond motifs are like a "field of amulets that are highly protective. They can also represent the womb, cycles of life and regeneration. Endless repetition shows the continuity of family.
The repeated eight-pointed shape can be a "Star of Wisdom" which encourages understanding and enlightenment.
Masculine and feminine symbols alternating together in harmony express balance and union infinitely.

TRANQUILITY

The purpose of this rug is:
To Support Emotional Energy
“This home will be a safe and happy place.”
Prominently outlined yellow medallions nestled within dusty rose mimic the safety of the womb. The tones in this rug support positive emotional energy.
Floral patterns represent the Garden of Eden, cycle of nature and life, encouraging fertility in all of its forms.
Bordering blue tones are further protective of this central womb. And dragon figures just before the border act as protectors against evil energies.

THE BELIEVER

The purpose of this rug is:
To Encourage Connection
“This union is immortal”
Two strong central medallions linked are a powerful and blissful union. Shapes within them, like seed pods, symbolize fertility.
Crosses floating around them, repel evil energy and cast it out to move in other directions.
At the edges of the rug sheltered in a protective grey/blue tone, trees of life stand with symbols of the eye, and together they are wishes for peace and immortality.
Eight pointed stars are more signs of happiness and fertility.

THE CREATOR

The purpose of this rug is:
Creative Enlightenment
“Here, ideas are born.”
A large protective eye or shield watches over diamonds that represent women and the womb, their strength and resilience shown in criss-crossing complex lines. To me, the womb also represents the well that creativity flows from.
Eight pointed stars loom over a lions paw, which is a strong symbol of guardianship, and a testament to the unwavering fortitude of the human spirit.
The stars keep us connected to the universe, and various symbols floating show a wealth of luck and protection.
The green elements reflect peace, on powerful and safe vibrant red.
